The 11th Road to Business Debate Cup Business English Debate Competition and National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Series was held at Shanghai University of Applied Sciences on May 12, 2019. Two teams selected by the Department of Business English of the College of Foreign Languages won the third prize in the national finals after the preliminary round and the final round.
Under the guidance of Ms. Zhu Haixia and Mr. Wang Xian, the head of the Department of Business English, Business English students Tang Yi, Chen Jiaqi, Liu Diya, Feng Luying and Shen Tu Zhuoyue formed Infinite and Frantic Metal respectively. The results of this event are one of the outcomes of the Foreign Studies Cup National Business English Practice Competition.
The preliminary round was submitted online in English, and the participants were required to present a specific business case based on existing technologies in the context of the economic development of One Belt, One Road, and put forward an English proposal in terms of project name, product description, user pain points, business model, operation management and strategic market. After more than one month of preparation, 48 teams from all over China entered the final round. The final round was decided by drawing lots on site, and the teams debated in English for a limited time on the project product, business model, and customer channel designed by the team through a PowerPoint presentation, questions and impromptu answers by the second defense, and a summary speech by the third defense. The judges were composed of university teachers and business leaders, and were selected through the scoring of each team.
After more than 10 face-to-face communication with instructors, online discussion and simulation exercises, the team members continuously revised and improved the PowerPoint presentation and each debater's speech, actively collected and organized problems and solutions, and fully trained on English language, debate strategy, impromptu answers and costumes. In the competition, despite the strength of the opponents, they were able to think quickly, make clear arguments, cooperate tacitly, and justify their arguments, showing the high level of English language and solid business knowledge of the students from the Department of Business English of the College of Foreign Languages.
