In the afternoon of April 10, the College of Foreign Languages held a seminar for young teachers and a training session for new teachers in Conference Room 515, where laughter was heard from time to time. Three old professors and experts who have retired from the College were invited as guest speakers, namely, Professors Wang Juquan, Zuo Biao and Wang Dawei. The meeting was co-chaired by Party Secretary Zhu Yaobin and Deputy Party Secretary Qian Minfang and attended by more than ten new teachers and young teachers.
Secretary Zhu first made an opening speech, in which he reviewed the years of working together with several old professors and the stormy course of our college's development, and also pointed out the main theme of this symposium: he hoped that new teachers and young teachers could inherit the glorious tradition of the old generation of experts and develop the college's education career to the fullest.
Professor Wang Juquan was the earliest one among the three professors to work in the school. He told the story from 1968 when he came to the Maritime College and worked as a teacher in the English department of the Department of Ocean Transportation, from the absence of an English department to the establishment of the Department of English at the end of 1978, and the guidance and assistance of several old and respected gentlemen in the foreign language field in the development of the Department at the beginning of its establishment. From the establishment of the department to the approval of the master's degree; from the Department of Foreign Languages to the present College of Foreign Languages ......, little by little, from nothing to something, Wang told the story, so that the young teachers in the post-80s and post-90s seemed to experience the development of foreign language majors for more than 50 years, and understand the characteristics of foreign language education and teaching in Hai University.
Professor Wang Dawei, a representative of the practical school of English teaching, selflessly shared his valuable experience in his decades of teaching career, such as extracting good English sentences, and accumulating vocabulary related to shipping, transportation and logistics. The vocabulary related to shipping, transportation and logistics should be accumulated more often, and should be close to the characteristics of our school. In addition, Mr. Wang also prepared a PowerPoint presentation on thesis writing, and shared his experience in thesis writing with the teachers present.
Professor Zuo Biao opened his speech with a short poem in English and Chinese, You and We, in which he sincerely explained his sense of honor for the teaching profession and emphasized the importance of teacher's morality. To be a teacher, one must use the words love and fear to win the fear of students with good moral character and high academic knowledge.
Finally, Prof. Wang Juquan emphasized again the responsibility and dedication, pointing out that as a teacher, one should have the minimum dedication, and only when one pays more, the teaching effect will be good. It seems that if you give more, you will actually get many rewards, such as the respect and gratitude from students.
At the meeting, Liu Huidan, Chen Lin and other young teachers asked several old professors for advice on the confusions they encountered in teaching and scientific research, and the old professors gave their advice.
Looking back on the decades of development of the college, we remembered the rigorous attitude of the old scholars and professors and their selfless hard work. The young teachers who attended the seminar said that they would not forget their original intention, try their best to do their jobs well and be a good teacher loved by students. The symposium was successfully concluded in a warm atmosphere.
