In the afternoon of April 10, the first lecture of English Language and Literature Series of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Maritime University was held in the lecture hall on the first floor of the Foreign Language Building, with Associate Professor Guo Haixia, Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning, giving the lecture, and some teachers and all undergraduate students of English Major Class 18 attended.

The English Language and Literature Lecture Series is a practical course for the 2018 undergraduate students of English major, which helps the first-year students gain a deep understanding of English language and literature as well as the history, society, culture, politics and economy of English-speaking countries, and helps college students form a clear study goal and direction for better career planning.

The title of this lecture is Women Novelists in Britain: From Austen to Woolf, which aims to explore and study the transmutation and social significance of feminist ideas in British novels by introducing the writing characteristics of British women novelists' works and the feminist ideas reflected in their works. In the lecture, Mr. Guo first introduced and explained to the students the representative figures of British realist women novelists - Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Lady Gaskell and George Eliot, etc., and then analyzed the reflection of the works on the social phenomena of the time with the original fragments and translations of the fictional works. Finally, combining examples of impressionist works, comparing the techniques of impressionist paintings and literary works as well as the characteristics of stream-of-consciousness novels, Ms. Guo Haixia introduces and explains the representative figures of British modernist women novelists - Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf - and their literary works.

The lecture was rich in content and illustrations, and the light-hearted and interesting topics aroused great interest and resonance among the students. The students learned the history and overview of the development of British feminist novels through the lectures, and also improved their language skills and literary appreciation.
